Blogs in the classroom

A great way to encourage students to write is publishing their work. Low-tech ways include class newspapers or handmade books. For the techy few of us out there like movie guru's Vicki and Eunji (Britney and Kristin are geeks-in-training), a great way to publish and save the environment is through blogging. With commenting features enabled, peer reviews can take place and provide scaffolding between advanced and struggling students in a non-traditional way so the smart kids like Sarah A. won't feel like they are doing all the work, but instead provide support in an "on my own terms" type way.

This method utilitizes constructivism in that active social engagement facilitates learning, allowing the strengths of the students a moment to shine and the added bonus comes in the form of reduced anxiety for students who are less vocal. Of course, practicing peer review in the real world is also beneficial and should not be ignored, we cannot always hide behind our computer screens.
