Kinder-2nd grade
Activity: Creating a sing-a-long to watch and
following along on the TV. “Same Language Subtitles”
or SLS can be used to help the kids follow the lyrics.
The song will help them be engaged and the subtitles
will give them a visual on what they are actually
singing.
The SLS can help in word identification and the music
itself will help with fluency, because just like echo
reading, they are able to hear proper intonations,
rhythms, and pronunciations.
4th grade and up
Activity: Use School House Rock to aid in teaching
grammar. For example, if the students are watching a
video about conjunctions, they can, as they are
watching the video write down as many conjunctions
they can hear and see on the screen. After the video
is over, have them write down any other conjunctions
that they know (unmentioned in the video) and then get
together with a partner and come up with 3-5 sentences
using their conjunctions.
The writing while watching the video will help them to
stay focused and not doze off in the dark. Having
follow up work is important because it will show you
who understood the assignment and having a partner to
complete the assignment with allows some of the
confusion to lessen from peer-teaching.

MySpace and Language Development

Most of us are familiar with MySpace. A great feature that authors have begun to capitalize on is the connection that can be made with their intended audience. For security reasons, access to MySpace at an elementary school will most likely be restricted, but you could have your class think of questions or write letters to an author of a class book and then post on the author's page. I have had great success in contacting authors with questions. They all reported that MySpace was a great way to reach their readers and break down the barriers of disconnect.
